Plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis.

That first step out of bed just got easier. Understand the heel pain that never quite goes away - and what actually helps.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation and degeneration of the plantar fascia - the thick band of connective tissue that runs along the underside of the foot, connecting the heel bone (calcaneus) to the base of the toes. It functions as a shock absorber and supports the arch of the foot during standing and movement.

When the plantar fascia is repeatedly overstretched or overloaded, small tears develop at its origin on the heel, leading to pain and local degeneration. The condition is characterised by sharp heel pain with the first steps of the morning - caused by the fascia tightening overnight and then being abruptly loaded when you stand up - that often eases after a few minutes of walking, then worsens again after prolonged standing or activity.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain in adults, affecting both active and sedentary populations.

Understanding plantar fasciitis

Icon for verifiedCauses and contributing factors
 • Prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces, particularly without adequate footwear cushioning
 • A sudden increase in running volume or intensity
 • Flat feet (overpronation) or high arches, both of which alter the load distribution on the plantar fascia
 • Tight calf muscles and Achilles tendon, which increase tension on the plantar fascia by limiting ankle dorsiflexion
 • Worn footwear that has lost its cushioning and arch support
 • Being overweight, which increases the load on the plantar fascia with every step

 • Sharp, stabbing heel pain with the first steps of the morning or after prolonged rest - the hallmark symptom
 • Pain that eases after a few minutes of walking, then returns with prolonged activity
 • Tenderness directly on the underside of the heel, at the origin of the plantar fascia
 • Stiffness and tightness in the arch of the foot, particularly at the start of the day
 • Pain that worsens when walking barefoot on hard surfaces or climbing stairs

The Bearhug ankle support wraps the heel and lower foot, providing compression to the plantar fascia origin and the surrounding soft tissue. This compression reduces swelling at the insertion point, maintains warmth in the fascia - which reduces the morning stiffness that causes the characteristic first-step pain - and improves circulation to an area of the body that has a relatively poor blood supply and heals slowly.

Wearing the ankle sleeve during activity provides support to the heel and arch throughout movement, reducing the repetitive micro-tearing that occurs when an already-irritated fascia is loaded without support. Many plantar fasciitis sufferers find that consistent compression during activity and during recovery significantly reduces their symptom severity and improves day-to-day function.

Alongside compression, calf stretching and eccentric heel drops are the most evidence-supported conservative treatments for plantar fasciitis. Addressing Achilles and calf tightness takes the tension off the plantar fascia at its origin and is one of the most effective long-term interventions available.
