Arthritic conditions.

Staying active with the joints you have. Warmth, compression, and support for the full range of arthritic conditions - from osteoarthritis to rheumatoid.

What are arthritic conditions?

Arthritis is not a single disease - it is an umbrella term for over 100 conditions that cause joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness. While they share these common features, they have different causes, mechanisms, and treatment approaches. Understanding which type of arthritis is present matters both for medical management and for understanding what self-care strategies are most appropriate.

The three most common arthritic conditions encountered in active and sporting populations are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It involves the gradual degradation of joint cartilage - the smooth tissue that cushions the ends of bones - leading to bone-on-bone contact, inflammation, and pain. OA most commonly affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine. It is associated with age, previous joint injury, and cumulative loading over a lifetime. It is not simply a consequence of being active - regular low-impact exercise is among the most effective management strategies for OA, as it maintains the muscle strength that protects joints and stimulates cartilage nutrition.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the synovial lining of the joints, causing chronic inflammation, pain, and eventual joint damage. Unlike OA, RA typically affects joints symmetrically (both wrists, both knees), often begins in the smaller joints of the hands and feet, and is accompanied by systemic symptoms including fatigue and morning stiffness lasting more than an hour. RA is managed primarily with medication but physical activity, joint protection strategies, and compression all play an important supporting role.

Gout

Gout is caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joint spaces, most commonly the big toe, ankle, or knee. Acute gout attacks produce sudden, severe joint pain, swelling, and redness. Between attacks, the joint may be entirely normal. Gout is managed through dietary and lifestyle changes that reduce uric acid levels, and with medication during acute attacks. Compression is most useful between attacks for joint support and warmth, and during the recovery phase after an acute episode settles.

How Bearhug helps across arthritic conditions

Warmth is consistently one of the most beneficial interventions across all arthritic conditions. Heat relaxes the muscles surrounding arthritic joints, increases circulation and synovial fluid distribution, and reduces the stiffness that makes early movement so painful. Bearhug bamboo compression sleeves maintain consistent joint warmth throughout the day without the discomfort of neoprene or the bulk of heat wraps - and are soft enough to wear directly against skin for extended periods.

Graduated compression reduces the joint swelling associated with arthritis flare-ups and chronic inflammation by improving venous return and lymphatic drainage from the affected joint. The proprioceptive feedback from compression improves joint awareness and reduces the instability and giving-way sensations that arthritic joints commonly produce.

Across all arthritic conditions, the goal is to stay moving. Compression supports make movement more comfortable, more confident, and less painful - which is what allows people with arthritic conditions to maintain the activity levels that slow progression and preserve quality of life.
