Swollen wrist.

Reduce it, support it, keep moving. Compression that helps manage wrist swelling and get you back to full movement sooner.

What causes a swollen wrist?

Wrist swelling is a symptom rather than a diagnosis in itself - it is the body's inflammatory response to injury, overuse, or an underlying condition. The wrist joint is a complex structure involving eight small carpal bones, multiple ligaments, tendons, and joint capsules, all of which can become irritated or injured and produce localised swelling.

The most common causes include acute sprains and ligament injuries, overuse tendinopathies from repetitive gripping or wrist loading in sport and manual work, inflammatory arthritis flare-ups, and post-injury swelling following a fracture or dislocation. In some cases, wrist swelling arises without a specific traumatic cause - from prolonged repetitive computer use, racket sport training, or activities that involve sustained wrist extension or flexion under load.

Most wrist swelling that follows a mild injury or overuse episode settles within a few days to weeks with appropriate management. Persistent swelling, swelling following a significant impact, or swelling accompanied by significant loss of movement warrants medical assessment to rule out fracture or serious ligament damage.

Understanding wrist swelling

Icon for verifiedSymptoms to recognise
  • Visible or palpable puffiness around the wrist joint, either localised or diffuse
  • Stiffness and reduced range of movement, particularly into flexion and extension
  • Aching or throbbing pain around the joint, worsening with use
  • Warmth over the swollen area in acute or inflammatory cases
  • A feeling of tightness or fullness in the wrist, particularly after activity

Graduated compression is one of the most effective tools for managing joint swelling. The Bearhug wrist support applies gentle but consistent pressure to the wrist, which physically limits the accumulation of inflammatory fluid in the joint and surrounding tissue. This reduces both the volume of swelling and the pain associated with a distended joint capsule.

Compression also improves venous return - the flow of blood and lymphatic fluid back out of the swollen area - which actively clears excess fluid rather than simply preventing further accumulation. The warmth generated by the bamboo fabric keeps the joint mobile and reduces the stiffness that accompanies swelling, allowing a fuller range of movement during recovery.

The Bearhug wrist support is soft, lightweight, and designed for extended wear - suitable both during daily activity and during sport or training while the wrist recovers. Bamboo's natural moisture-wicking and antimicrobial properties keep it comfortable against the skin for long periods without irritation.
